Developed from exceptional instrument examples from that time period and clearly proves that quality can stand the test of time. Collings (2010) 002H (Natural)

Collings (2010) 002H (Natural)

We offer the 00 in its original, 12-fret configuration, a guitar shape that was first designed around the time of the Civil War. Its dimensions are similar to a typical classical guitar, with a slotted headstock and small pyramid bridge. The comfortable size and timeless appearance of the Collings 00 is matched by the ease of playing a wide neck and shorter string scale affords. The tone is typically balanced and precise, and we’ve seen it adopted for a wide range of playing styles from simple vocal accompaniment to ragtime solos. When you want the durability of a modern guitar but one that appears rooted in an earlier, simpler time, the 00 is a versatile choice.

Features Include:

  • Select Sitka spruce
  • East Indian rosewood back and sides
  • Grained ivoroid binding

Collings (2010) D2HA (Adirondack Spruce)

Collings (2010) D2HA (Adirondack Spruce)

The square-shouldered 14-fret dreadnought is the most popular steel-string acoustic guitar body shape in the world. While Collings is certainly not the first to build them, we bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar. Although its bass response makes the dreadnought ideal for vocal accompaniment, Collings versions are also often employed by bluegrass flatpickers who must compete with inherently louder instruments such as banjos and fiddles. The wide range of woods and neck sizes offered allow dreadnought fans to find a Collings model ideally suited to their playing style and tonal preference.

Features Include:

  • Custom Select Adirondack spruce top
  • East Indian rosewood back and sides
  • Grained ivoroid binding

Some Background

“For three years in the early 70s, the two young guys actually building the guitars in the renowed NY workshop of Michael Gurian were Thomas Humphrey and Michael Millard. Both went on to become significant builders over the next four decades, Humphrey in the world of the classical guitar, Millard in the steel-string realm. Gurian, of course, remains an iconic figure in the world of stringed instruments.

In 2008, a reunion was arranged in the form of a “luthier’s cruise”, the idea of a guitarist David Johnson. Lutherie legend Gurian, his two disciples and their families were to be the guests of honor on a week-long cruise from Seattle to Alaska and back. Tragically, Thomas Humphrey died of a heart attack on April 2008 and that reunion never happened. He left behind a family unable to benefit financially from all he had given to the world of the guitar.

Many saw Humphrey as a fabulously successful luthier whose “Millennium” design transformed the world of the classical guitar. Unnoticed, perhaps, were the years of struggle before his innovative ideas became broadly acknowledged as the brilliant work they were.

After Tom Humphrey’s death, Millard asked permission of his wife, Martha Costa Humphrey, to build a guitar honoring her husband and as a benefit for the Humphrey family. She quietly agreed to allow this, insisting that the wood for the project come from Tom’s supply of Brazilian rosewood. The wood she offered was purchased by her husband in 1974 and was dated from 1929.

The guitar built served as the prototype for the new Froggy Bottom concert size instrument, a traditionally shaped 00. The Froggy Bottom team of Millard, Eric Goodenough, M.L. Raymond and engraver Petria Mitchell completed the guitar in August, 2009. Millard approached Rudy Pensa and Gordon French of Rudy’s Music in New York City about selling the guitar. Pensa, both generous and keenly appreciative of Humphrey’s legacy, offered to sell the guitar and graciously refused any commission for doing so.”

- Michael Millard, Froggy Bottom Guitars

Froggy Bottom (2009) B 12 fret 12 string Baritone

Froggy Bottom (2009) B 12 Custom 12-string Baritone

This is one unique instrument! a 12 fret Jumbo 12 string, with a 26” scale length. This guitar was designed to be tuned at least a full step down, but we played it tuned down as low as B and it roars!

The model B-12 has a lower bout of 16.5” and a depth of 4.5” giving it plenty of power, but with a balance we’ve come to expect from 12-fret guitars. The figured walnut back and sides were described by the Froggy Bottom boys as “the best they’ve ever seen!”.
The top is Red Spruce, the fretboard and bridge and of ebony.

The appointments are understated but beautiful. The body is bound in figured maple, with black and white purffling around the top edge, the simple dot fretboard markers are of abalone to match the frog headstock inlay. The rosette and back-strip are multicolored chevron.

The perfect 12 string for fans of Lead Belly & Willie McTell!

Froggy Bottom (2009) F14 Deluxe

Froggy Bottom (2009) F14 Deluxe

Model F evolved out of conversions of Martin arch tops in the 1960’s New York shop of Matt Umanov. Those early conversions demonstrated the virtues of reducing the body volume of larger instruments, and clearly altered the course of contemporary flat top guitar design. The shallowness of the body (4 1/8” maximum) of an F guitar makes it very comfortable to play, and contributes to the guitar’s exceptional string-to-string balance, clarity, and projection.

Some backround on this amazing model from Froggy Bottom:

Model SJ

“One afternoon in 1968, I watched a drunken sailor with a pillow case slung over his shoulder stagger into a pawn shop in New London, CT. Since the bag on his shoulder was very guitar-like, as soon as he emerged counting his money, I went into the shop to see what he’d sold. After twenty minutes of bickering, I emerged with a very well worn twenty year old Gibson SJ. As I already had a guitar I loved, the SJ was only around for a couple of months, but almost as soon as I’d sold it to a friend, I was sorry. Forty years later, the friend still has that guitar, and it is still one of the very best guitars I have ever known.

In recent times older instruments of this short scale design have become extremely popular, and their value has soared. While over the years we have built a few one-off commissioned SJ-type guitars, we’ve now decided to add this design to our roster of formal models.

As we built the prototype of this model we did our best to photograph each step in the process and uploaded images of each day’s accomplishments to a blog. We’ve reworked that so you can see this guitar from start to finish in our Model SJ Blog Revisited. “

James Goodall (2009) Traditional Dreadnought

James Goodall (2009) Traditional Dreadnought

With Adirondack Spruce top and East Indian Rosewood back & Sides.

The Traditional model features the popular dreadnought body shape. Its tone is extremely powerful in the bass and midrange with an emphasis on a broad warmth without lacking treble. The Traditional model features a custom, partial scalloped bracing pattern which produces a bit more ‘boominess’ in the bass and midrange. The peghead and bridge have been redesigned for a more conservative look and Waverly tuning machines are a standard feature. It is nicely trimmed with a herringbone rosette and herringbone top purfling with a chevron marquetry backstrip. It is especially built for the flatpicker and bluegrass style players.

‘“I first made the 38 back in 1976 for a friend of mine Alastair Burke. Normally I don’t use much shell inlays in my guitars but with this model I’ve indulged a little! Subtle use of leaf shaped abalone fingerboard inlays and soundboard purfling combine with the ideal choice of reclaimed Brazilian rosewood and a cedar top. One of my preferred choices now!” – George Lowden

R. Taylor (2010) Style3

R. Taylor (2010) Style 3

The Style 3 is a body design that is close to the hearts of many players, Bob Taylor included. While the R. Taylor shop is known primarily for building “modern” guitars, this timeless design has been on our minds since we began crafting instruments.

With a respectful nod toward tradition, our luthiers have applied their experience as craftsmen and musicians to create an instrument that will captivate guitarists who crave a traditional design and tone. The Style 3 is capable of everything that vintage D-style instruments are known for, and then some. This guitar delivers all the volume, punch, projection and downright chest-rumbling low end that collectively have endeared many players to a D-style instrument.

By applying our construction techniques to this time-honored design, we have crafted an instrument that presents every single note with unprecedented clarity and volume. We’ve also kept things simple. The Style 3 features one bracing pattern (Modified X) and one top geometry (65-foot radius). No cutaway will be offered. Of course, all of our wood choices are available on the Style 3, along with a choice of nut widths, neck shapes, binding and other appointments.

Santa Cruz (2010) OM/PW

Santa Cruz (2009) OM/PW

The OM Pre-War Model is designed with many of the features in bracing and tone that the emerging singer-songwriter, the working musician, or a serious amateur will find desirable at a price before unheard of in guitars of this caliber.

The advanced X braces, which is the bracing pattern “Pre-War” refers to, is a good tonal option for those using the guitar for smaller accompaniment or rhythm. This style bracing gives the smaller bodied OM an incredible presence and bass response, yet retains a good balance with strong midrange and bright powerful response.

Santa Cruz (2010) 1929 000

The OOO is the full sized version of the 1929 Model series. A longer, 25.375 inch scale for additional volume and bass make it a worthy ensemble instrument. You will find the same simple and elegant aesthetics of the 1929-O and 1929-OO versions. The master grade True Mahogany top is correctly dimensioned and hand voiced for a full and complex presence, and the elements for an heirloom guitar are all in place. The 1929-OOO’s look includes a period correct script logo done tastefully in Ivoroid. Classic Ebony complements the pyramid bridge, tuner buttons, head-plate and fretboard. An appropriately simple rosette is inlaid with a rich faux tortoise shell celluloid ring in a vintage Ivoroid border. The 1929-OOO Model has all the exceptional presence and playability that you would expect from the Santa Cruz stable of state of the art acoustic guitars.

Santa Cruz (2010) DH

This is far and away the best sounding Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce Herringbone dreadnaught available today.

Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood, Ebony fingerboard and bridge, Bone nut and compensated saddle, Brazilian Rosewood headstock overlay, ivoroid body and fingerboard bindings, zigzag back strip, and an oh-so-gorgeous ring of herringbone top purflings. Finished in traditional Nitrocellulose Lacquer, hand rubbed and buffed nice and thin.

At the heart of the guitar is SCGC’s meticulously hand-scalloped braces, small maple bridgeplate, and super-light weight. The X is not “Advanced” or shifted forward on this guitar as it is in the P/W series, and the result is a super-powerful and well-balanced flatpicking dream. The neck is a satin finished soft-V profile with a nut width of 1 23/32” (or in between 11/16ths and 3/4 inches).

It feels great, and plays exactly as you want it too. And Santa Cruz uses a hand-fit dovetailed neck joint on all their guitars so sound transfer is not dampened by parts that aren’t glued together…

Santa Cruz (2010) H-13 (??)

Santa Cruz (2010) H-13 (Sunburst)

What’s up with thirteen frets? The historical precedent for this classic shape was the Gibson ‘Nick Lucas Special’ from the 1920’s and ’30’s, the one Bob Dylan holds in early photos. The “H” designation is an acknowledgement to the guardian of the lore of all things vintage and stringed, Maestro Paul Hostetter, who commissioned SCGC to build the prototype in 1978. In spite of the question of whether the historic 13 frets to the body had any basis in acoustic science, our reason for using it does.

SCGC’s concept for the H-13 is to achieve power beyond what would be expected in a small-bodied guitar. Two fundamental lutherie tricks make this possible: a longer string length (more downward pressure at the saddle) and more air space via a deeper body (increased volume and bass response). To place the bridge in the optimal position for power and maintain the longer string length, the neck needs to join the body at the 13th fret. Cool, huh? This is a gorgeous classic with power and presence expected from a much larger instrument. Perfect for aggressive fingerstyle blues and vocal accompaniment, the H-13 feels really sweet to hold.

Santa Cruz (2010) OOO

Santa Cruz (2010) OOO

The OOO is the 12-fret predecessor of the OM. If access past the 12th fret is of no concern, the OOO adds some distinct advantages tonally and cosmetically. The extension of the body to the 12th fret adds additional airspace, which translates into increased sound volume and a more predominate bass in the EQ. The slotted peghead is a standard feature that adds classic styling. The peghead’s reduced mass accentuates the guitar’s open, airy ambiance, making it a fingerstyle favorite. You’ve seen the SCGC OOO on stage with Jeff Tweedy and Dave Matthews as a solid performing songwriter’s tool. It has also been heard in numerous recordings as a mainstay of pro session players. You will find immediate purpose for the OOO and wonder why you didn’t have it in your arsenal all along.

Taylor (2002) The Liberty Tree Acoustic Guitar

Taylor (2002) The Liberty Tree Acoustic Guitar

When Taylor Guitars released The Liberty Tree guitar in 2002, the 400 instruments made, were distributed with a maximum availability of two per dealer. Rudy’s promptly stashed the first one we received #42 and are only now! putting this unique piece of history up for sale.

One tree in each of the 13 colonies was designated as a Liberty tree, and used as a meeting place by the patriots who organized the Revolutionary War. The back and sides of the Liberty Tree Guitar are made from the last surviving of the 13 Liberty Trees, a Tulip Poplar, which resided on the St. Johns campus in Annapolis Maryland. Taylor guitars acquired the wood after the tree was uprooted by Hurricane Floyd in 1999. Each Liberty Tree featured a select sitka spruce top, Mahogany neck and ebony fretboard. An inlaid “Declaration of Independence and early American flag unfurl across the fretboard extension and top. The rosette has thirteen stars representing the thirteen colonies inlaid into it. The headstock also sports an inlaid American Flag in it’s Ebony headstock veneer.

This Beautiful Taylor Grand Concert guitar is a piece not only of Taylor’s history, but America’s as well.

Historical Background

The Liberty Tree Guitar is Taylor’s homage to the resilient spirit of freedom that inspired our nation’s birth. This special series is made from the last survivor of 13 Liberty Trees, around which the early-American Colonists gathered to spread their ideals of independence and strategize the American Revolution. The Liberty Tree endured as a nurturing symbol of our nation’s growth until sustaining fatal injuries from Hurricane Floyd in 1999. Never before has Bob Taylor undertaken a guitar endeavor with such reverence.

Features

The Liberty Tree is a Grand Concert with back and sides of gloriously figured, chocolate-and-vanilla-colored tulip poplar, and an abalone-edged top of Sitka spruce. A laser-etched, burly maple inlay of a scrolled Declaration of Independence extends from the fingerboard onto the guitar top. The rosette combines a crescent of 13 stars (one for each of the original Colonies) around one half of the soundhole, opposite an early battle pennant that flew during the Revolution. A depiction of the first post-Revolution American flag is inlaid in dyed maple on the peghead.

Taylor (2009) 35th Anniversary Baritone (Sunburst)

Taylor (2009) 35th Anniversary Baritone (Sunburst)

The beauty of a baritone guitar compared to simply tuning down is that a baritone’s longer scale length (in our case, 27 inches compared to our standard 25.5 or short-scale 24 7/8) allows one to play in a lower register, yet maintain normal string tension. Baritones have been used by artists from Dave Matthews (we made him a pseudo-baritone guitar several years ago) to Duane Eddy to Ani DiFranco. A baritone will appeal to anyone looking for a deeper guitar tone, including singer-songwriters who find the upper register of certain songs to be a stretch for their vocals. Our 35th anniversary baritone is tuned to B (B E A D F# B). To help achieve a low, robust sound, we chose the GS shape and a wood pairing of Indian rosewood, known for its strong bass response, and Sitka spruce. Strummers who favor a potent, girthy sound and like to detune will love them. The baritone also features a tobacco sunburst top, Indian rosewood binding, an abalone rosette, Taylor gold tuners, a Venetian cutaway and the ES pickup.
