Stromberg (1950) Master 400 (Natural)
1950 Stromberg Master-400 in natural finish. This 1950 Stromberg is about as rare as it gets. Charles and Elmer Stromberg produced approx 640 instruments between the mid 30’s and 1955, when both father and son died within months of each other. Stromberg archtops are considered by many as the finest archtop instruments ever made.
The Master 400 was known for its incredible volume and sustain. This particular guitar is unique in several ways. Not only its 1 of the 7 cutaways Strombergs known to exist, but it also has a lower bout width of 17 1/2” (Typical Master 400 where 19” suggesting that this one was a special order) making this instrument one-of-a-kind.
Back and sides are beautiful flamed maple under a natural finish that we suspect it’s been restored. The spruce top has it’s tightest grain the middle, getting progressively wider as it approaches the edges. The bridge and fretboard are of Ebony, the top and fretboard are bound in white with 5 layers of black and white purfling. The original pickguard sports the requisite D’Armond pickup that was popular among Jazz players of its day.
The overall condition of the instrument is excellent making this a true collectable.
