Some backround on the builder

Carl Thompson (born 1939) is a luthier and musician specializing in the construction of high-quality custom bass guitars, based in Brooklyn, New York.

Born in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania to a large musical family, he moved to New York City in 1967 to pursue a career as a jazz guitarist. After working in a guitar shop to supplement his income, he started his own guitar repair business. He made his first instrument in 1974 and quickly gained renown in the craft.

Carl is attributed with creating both the first electric piccolo bass (commissioned by Stanley Clarke) and the first fretless six string bass.

Les Claypool’s fretless six-string, the “Rainbow Bass,” is one of his trademarks. Besides the Rainbow Bass, Claypool owns six other Carl Thompson creations.

Thompson basses are sought after and he maintains a two year waiting list, though some orders can take well over three years to complete. The cost for a basic four string bass made by Thompson is about $4,000. Basses such as the “Rainbow Bass” can cost well over $10,000 although Carl will not make copies of the bass for his clients despite being asked to do so in the past – he maintains that all his basses are “one of a kind”.

Thompson continues to be an active musician, practicing several hours a day, and performing once a week at a local Brooklyn restaurant. He has a fascination with jazz singers, and is a respected vocal coach of young singers.

Pending Bass 5 (Hofner Viola Style)

Hofner (2003) 1963' Violin Bass reissue (Sunburst)

Named for the year the most familiar version of the Violin Bass was popularized, the Vintage ’63 captures its characteristic tone — deep, warm and reminiscent of a full-size string bass. Built to be as durable as its legacy, the compact-sized, easy-to-play, light-in-weight Vintage ’63 is equally at home on stage or in the studio.

Exact replica of the ’63 model Violin Bass. The narrow neck and medium scale length of 30’‘ (76 cm) make for optimum playability.

Pedulla (2007) 5-string Rapture (Black)

Pedulla (2007) 5-string Rapture (Black)

The Rapture is our “modern vintage” design, with a satin finish bolt-on neck and a pearloid or tortoiseshell pickguard, and is available in four string and as 17.5mm or 19mm five string basses. The Rapture’s thinner, racier design combines a single flatsawn hard maple neck and a solid soft Eastern maple body. This combination sets the stage for a classic sound enhanced by a smooth midrange and a bright high-end that cuts through even the most crowded mix. Specially tailored active electronics bring out the Rapture’s unique tonal range. The single pickup Rapture (RB-SB) include a master volume, and separate bass and treble control knobs (boost/cut +/-15db) which complete flexibility in shaping the sound. A mid-cut switch accentuates the Rapture bass’ gut shaking sub-bottom while emphasizing high-end clarity and growl and delivering vintage punch with an extra wide attack. The active electronics include master volume, pickup pan, and treble and bass boost/cut controls. The Rapture has a machined brass “barrel” bridge which imparts the more traditional sound we wanted from a bolt on. (The more massive bridge we use on the neck-through-body models detracts from the high-end in a bolt-on.)
