AM Guitars (2010) Bad Boy

Bad Boy

I originally thought about calling this guitar the ‘Bag Boy Golf Cart’, since most of the parts used for the body came from recycling a golf cart, but it ended up sounding so ‘bad’, that deserved the name! This guitar was one of the first proto-experiments I ever did. With a maple neck through-body and solid perforated aluminum on top. The neck features an ebony fingerboard and perforated aluminum on the headstock as well. The bridge was custom built out of aluminum and brass electrical nuts. It also features a bigsby tremolo, Lace single coil pickups and Steinberger gearless tuners.

This guitar’s body is made of steel and was hand shaped with a hammer and an anvil; that I got from my wife as a gift on father’s day, she found them at a metal recycle center. The guitar features an ebony block through the body that is glued together with the maple neck. Also with an Ebony fingerboard. Features Seymour Duncan Hot Rails pickups, Steinberger tuner machines, Schaller bridge and custom built steel tail piece.

The Electric Beamer II

This is one of those amazing things that happened by accident, like most of them do. Wondering through the junk yard, found this very interesting shaped part and had to bring it to my shop. After a while of seeing it lying in my shop, I had to build a guitar out of it. The body is mainly built out of a BMW’s engine intake manifold. The woodwork on the body was inspired by classical nylon guitars, and was built out of recycled floor’s walnut. The maple neck runs through the body, and features an ebony fingerboard and a custom unique aluminum logo. The guitar features a Gotoh hardtail bridge, EMG active humbuckers & Planet Waves auto-trim locking tuners.

The Ricken II

The name comes from my admiration to Rickenbacker guitars. The shape was inspired on early Rickenbacker models. The body features both maple and cherry that were both recycled from old floors. The skeleton is shaped out of aluminum, which can also be found on the Maple neck and the AM logo on the headstock face.

Fender '62 Telecaster Custom (Sunburst)

Fender '62 Telecaster Custom (Sunburst)

The double-bound alder body and multi-ply pickguard that dressed up the ’62 Telecaster guitar distinguished it from its Butterscotch predecessor. And rosewood, originally introduced for cosmetic reasons because maple was prone to showing wear, quickly grew in popularity with the warmth it added to the classic Telecaster tone.

In the spirit of the original, our American Vintage ‘62 Telecaster Custom guitar has a C-shaped maple neck with a 7.25”-radius rosewood fingerboard. It also features a pair of ’62 Custom Tele single-coil pickups, a vintage Tele bridge with threaded steel saddles, and the original Tele circuit with three-position switch.

American Vintage ‘52 Telecaster

Fender (2009) American Vintage ‘52 Telecaster

One of the longest-running production models in Fender’s history, the Telecaster guitar has been modified only slightly in its more than 50 legendary years, with its great strength inherent in its classic simplicity. We pay homage to our own with the American Vintage ’52 Telecaster. Its premium ash body, one-piece U-shaped maple neck with 7.25”-radius fingerboard, single-ply black pickguard and original Tele circuit with three-position switch exude vintage authenticity, as do the brass bridge saddles and ashtray bridge cover. A vintage six-saddle bridge and a modern wiring update kit are included.

Fender (2009) Road Worn 50's Stratocaster (Black)

Few things in this world have gotten cooler with age than the Stratocaster. Born in the ’50s, they became even cooler after years of use (and abuse) on the road—morphing over time to look appealingly battered and feel even better than when they were brand-new. Fender’s new maple-fretboard Road Worn ’50s Strat delivers that aged look and feel—built to look, sound and feel like it’s got more than just a few miles on it, designed with 1950s specs, including a nitrocellulose-lacquer finish, and supercharged with Tex-Mex™ pickups and 6105 frets. Made in Mexico. Includes Hard Shell Case.

Gretsch (2010) Custom Shop G6120EC Eddie Cochran Tribute Model (Vintage Orange)

Gretsch (2010) Custom Shop G6120EC Eddie Cochran Tribute Model (Vintage Orange)

Tuesday, January 12, 2010 – The Gretsch Custom Shop could not possibly be more proud to introduce a very special 50-instrument run of a meticulously crafted recreation of one of the most famous guitars in rock ‘n’ roll and rockabilly history—the modified Gretsch 6120 owned and played by Eddie Cochran. Early 2010 will see the long-awaited debut of the Gretsch Custom Shop G6120EC Eddie Cochran Tribute model.

During his all-too brief life and career, Eddie Cochran (1938-1960) only ever owned and played one main electric guitar, an orange Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins hollow-body he bought brand-new in 1955 at age 16 from the Bell Gardens Music Center in his hometown, Bell Gardens, Calif. The guitar bore the serial number 16942, and his parents helped him buy it. A sharp young guitarist who was particular about his sound and knowledgeable about guitar design and modification, Cochran hot-rodded his Gretsch with a warmer-sounding “dog ear” neck pickup.

It was this guitar that accompanied Cochran on his rise to stardom. It was this guitar that Cochran played on hits such as “Summertime Blues,” “Twenty Flight Rock,” “C’mon Everybody,” “Somethin’ Else” “Nervous Breakdown” and “Sittin’ in the Balcony,” which influenced generation of guitarists—and guitar royalty—to come. And it was this guitar that was in the trunk of the car on the April 1960 night that Cochran met his tragic and untimely fate on a winding rural road in Chippenham, England.

It is this famous guitar that has now been so painstakingly recreated by Gretsch, with the blessing of the Cochran family and with the reverence and sense of history that absolutely must be accorded an instrument of such import.

  • * * * *

The delicate job was entrusted to Gretsch Custom Shop master luthier Stephen Stern, an acclaimed craftsman who is well aware of Cochran’s place in music history and the historical significance of his guitar. Stern, along with Cochran’s nephew, Ed Julson, traveled to Cleveland in January 2009 to examine the famous guitar at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

It should be noted here that the Cochran family has been extremely protective of Eddie Cochran’s legacy and identity in general and his personal belongings in particular, not the least of which is his Gretsch guitar.

The story goes that the first policeman to arrive on the scene of accident that claimed Cochran’s life on Easter Sunday 1960 found the guitar in the trunk of the car and removed it to his own home for several days so that it wouldn’t be lost in the public melee surrounding the incident and the ensuing investigation. The instrument was safely returned to the Cochran family home shortly thereafter, and there it stayed for many years. It became an instrument frozen in time: the strings were never even so much as loosened; the other contents of the case—guitar strap, polishing cloth, gig poster, etc., were left undisturbed. Eddie Cochran was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987; his family subsequently allowed the guitar to be displayed there, where it has remained ever since the museum opened in 1995.

The January 2009 examination held several emotional moments for all involved—especially Julson, who was only 3 years old when his 16-year-old uncle Eddie bought the guitar in 1955.

“To Eddie, it was—along with family—his first or second love,” Julson said of the guitar. “For me, it’s a part of someone I very much loved. He took exceptional care with it. It went everywhere with him—it was in the car no matter where he was going.”

Stern and Julson arrived at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to find the guitar in what Stern called “very good condition—very little wear on the back; a little on the neck.”

Gingerly handling the 54-year-old guitar with gloved hands and surgical focus, Stern proceeded to carefully spec out Cochran’s guitar in meticulously exacting detail from headstock to tailpiece, leaving no measurement unrecorded, no matter how small.

That he was handling a genuine piece of music history was not lost on Stern.

“Eddie was a legend, a guitar hero and an innovator,” he said. “He was at the birth of rock ‘n’ roll and rockabilly. He was one of the founding pioneers.”

“To be able to have access to this guitar and to recreate it, especially being that this was his prime guitar—his only guitar—that he used throughout his career, to be able to hold and examine a part of rock ‘n’ roll history is just very exciting. You never dream that something would happen like this. I never did.”

  • * * * *

The result of Stern’s craftsmanship is a re-created Gretsch instrument that you could say is truly “something else.”

Virtually indistinguishable from the original, the Gretsch Custom Shop G6120EC Eddie Cochran Tribute model is authentic in every detail, from the aluminum nut and bridge to the famous “dog ear” neck pickup; from the distressed vintage orange nitrocellulose lacquer finish to the relic gold-plated hardware and Bigsby® B6GPVF vibrato tailpiece.

Its features include a bound laminated maple body and arched top, a specially shaped three-piece maple/walnut/maple neck with a 22-fret 9”-radius bound rosewood fingerboard, a Seymour Duncan® “Dog Ear” single-coil neck pickup, a Seymour Duncan® DynaSonic™ single-coil bridge pickup, three-way switching, rosewood bridge base, vintage-style gold Gotoh® SE700-05M tuners, modified plexi pickguard, western block fingerboard inlays (depicting cactus, steer heads and fences), lower body bout “G” brand, and pearloid steer head/Gretsch logo inlay on the bound headstock.

The deluxe hardshell case also contains special commemorative materials, including a reprint of the concert poster found in Cochran’s car after the accident, an Eddie Cochran Live at Town Hall Party DVD, a G6120EC Eddie Cochran Tribute model “making of” DVD, a reproduction of Cochran’s original guitar strap, a reproduction of the Gretsch polishing cloth found in Cochran’s guitar case after the accident, and some other surprises.

Frankly, the Gretsch Custom Shop G6120EC Eddie Cochran Tribute model is long overdue. Cochran’s direct influence on guitarists such as Pete Townshend, George Harrison, Jimmy Page, Bryan Setzer and many others, and his pioneering contributions to rock ‘n’ roll and rockabilly, simply cannot be overestimated. Cochran was a bona fide guitar hero in the era before guitar heroes, and one can only speculate on the musical heights he might have reached had he lived beyond the age of 21.

His youthful spirit infuses that guitar to this day, and Gretsch is very proud indeed to introduce an instrument bearing his name.

“We’re very honored to be able to recreate this instrument and have this history to carry on,” Stern said. “It’s going to carry on Eddie’s legacy.”

Jesselli Gold Modernaire

Jesselli Gold Modernaire

Incredible one-of a kind guitar. Joseph Jesselli designs and creates cutting-edge guitars inspired by the Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements of the early 20th century. The result is something of an anachronism; modern technology seamlessly blended with an elegant and classic aesthetic.

Base materials: “plum pudding” mahogany, mastadon ivory, African elephant ivory, ebony, horn (there are no plastics or synthetics), quarter-sawn curly rock maple

• 25 1/2” scale
• Tuning Keys: Gotoh, height-adjustable post, custom gold-plated buttons, modified housing
• Head Piece: Ebony face, gold-lip pearl logo, horn and mastadon ivory trussrod cover, ivory nut, arched nut fascilitates first-position playing
• Neck: Quarter-sawn ebony fretboard, pearl and mahogany inlay, silicon-bronze frets, compound-radius fretboard, quarter-sawn rock maple neck, carved ivory binding
• Body: Solid ebony cutaways, triple-gold-plated carved bronze sides, top and back are matching “plum-pudding” mahogany, hollow-body
• Tailpiece: Custom-made, triple-gold-plated
• Pickups: Leather-covered, gold and horn pickup rings, custom-made by Seymour Duncan on Jaguar bobbins
• Electronics: High-grade cermet volume potentiometer, 16-contour tone selector, five-way pickup selector, signal path wired in silver
• Knobs: Horn bases keep knobs parallel to strings, made from horn and mastadon ivory
• Bridge: Horn with masatadon ivory saddles, height-adjustable
• Toggle Switch: Carved horn
• Strap: Leather that matches the pickup covers, custom strap locks, adjustable length
• Finish: Oil finish (approximately thirty coats applied by hand), retains absolutely every detail in the carving
• Heel Cap: Ebony and pearl
• Comes with custom-fitted case with humidifier/de-humidifier
• All screws are machine screws that fit into tapped metal fixtures. This makes stripping impossible.
• Comes with all required tools

The carving on the back of the headstock serves two purposes. First, it adds strength to a highly-stressed area. Second, it reduces headpiece vibration which can cause “dead notes.”

The frets are made out of materials commonly used in bearings. This metal burnishes to a smooth surface with prolonged playing.

Neck joints are large sliding dove-tails. It’s an extremely stable and strong joint.

The arched nut and its distance from the fret nut fasciliates first position playing, making it easier to bend notes.

Absolutely everything is hand-made by one man in a shop. Nothing on the guitar is manufactured save for the tuning key housings and the pickups.

PRS Paul Reed Smith (2009) Private Stock Eagle I Howard Leese Replica (Vintage Yellow)

Every PRS is special, but the Howard Leese Golden Eagle LTD joins an illustrious group of extremely LTD-edition PRS guitars. The PRS Howard Leese Golden Eagle LTD is an authentic model of Paul’s first-ever maple-topped guitar, which became Howard Leese’s first-pick axe for more than 15 years. (The top, in fact, came from a dresser drawer given to Paul.) Built by the Private Stock team, each of these 100 guitars has a stunning East Coast curly maple top (with a filled-in drawer-hole, like the original), plus old-style bird inlays and a vintage stain. All in all, you’ll find an incredible collector’s item — and a testament to PRS craftsmanship — in the Paul Reed Smith Howard Leese Golden Eagle LTD.

Paul Reed Smith Howard Leese Golden Eagle LTD Electric Guitar at a Glance:

  • This guitar has a story
  • LTD Edition, one of just 100
  • Built by the best — personally checked by Paul Reed Smith

This guitar has a story

The Howard Leese Golden Eagle LTD recalls a special moment in Paul Reed Smith history. It’s a perfect model of Paul Reed Smith’s first-ever maple-topped guitar — an instrument that instantly became guitar-wizard Howard Leese’s first-pick guitar, for more than 15 years now. What made that first guitar so special is that Paul crafted the maple top from a dresser drawer his friend gave him — it sported filled-in drawer holes, marking its original woodworking intention. This Howard Leese Golden Eagle LTD features those same authentic drawer marks on its gorgeous East Cost curly maple top. The guitar itself features a Santana-type body shape — modified for the same thickness and carve as Howard’s — plus Paul’s old-style mother-of-pearl bird inlays (with modified wings). It’s even loaded with a Vintage Yellow/Amber stain, to perfectly match Howard’s guitar. You’ll find Howard and his special Golden Eagle on a recent cover of Vintage Guitar magazine. That beauty — and yours — will be indistinguishable.

LTD Edition, one of just 100

To further elevate the Howard Leese Golden Eagle LTD’s status, it’s part of an exclusive, extremely LTD-edition run. Just 100 of these collectible guitars are out there — Howard’s own makes 101.

Built by the best — personally checked by Paul Reed Smith
Paul Reed Smith’s Maryland workshop is known as home to many of the world’s finest luthiers. And, the Howard Leese Golden Eagle LTD was crafted by the best of those best — only the hands of Paul’s elite Private Stock team worked on this guitar. What’s more, to ensure that every Private Stock guitar is the finest instrument possible, Paul Reed Smith personally checks the guitar and signs it as a way of passing on his approval. After Paul’s close check, your Howard Leese Golden Eagle LTD then received a Private Stock number, along with a letter of authenticity describing its special specifications and features.

PRS Paul Reed Smith (2010) Custom 24 Limited (Orange Fade)

Officially launched at Winter NAMM 2010, the Custom 24 Ltd. is a 200 piece run for the player who demands vintage and modern features and playability at the highest quality level. This guitar is the first PRS model offered with our coveted 59-09 pickups that are wired for our 5-way blade switch, allowing you to capture the famous PRS sounds. The Custom 24 Ltd. will be offered in five eye-catching colors: Amber Black, double-stained Vintage Burst, Charcoal, and two unique stain fades—blue and red/orange.
“PRS is in the middle of a new stage, and the 59/09™ pickups are a big part of that. Like our 57/08™ pickups, the wire for the 59/09s™ is from the same machine that wired the legendary pickups of the late 50’s and early 60’s. This slightly modified wire and a few more or less turns, makes the 59/09s™ a little hotter on the treble and a little brighter on the bass pickup. They sound great.” – Paul Reed Smith

When discussions about this new signature model began, Al and Paul Reed Smith were both adamant that the guitar maintained the highest quality and tonal integrity. Al also suggested a tie-dye like finish for the guitar, to give it a truly unique look. Paul Smith and the PRS R&D team combined Al’s favorite guitar appointments and a full spectrum of colors to create a one of a kind PRS Guitar.

Al Di Meola was one of the very first artists featured on a magazine cover playing a PRS guitar and has supported PRS Guitars for more than 20 years. Not only is the Al Di Meola Prism one of the most striking guitars PRS has ever developed, it pays tribute to a legendary musician who helped lay the frame work for PRS Guitars as a company.

History

Hailing from NYC, Gil is shaking up the guitar world with his killer chops and unique style that cohesively fuses jazz, funk, rock and country. He’s the former lead guitarist with Blood, Sweat and Tears, and has worked with David Sanborn, Will Lee, Dr. John, Chuck Rainey, and many others.

Gil’s requirements were straightforward: build a unique looking, extremely versatile guitar that is gig-ready right out of the box, and sells for under £500.. And so it was born: Reverend humbuckers, and a Lace Sensor Burgundy single-coil in the middle. The humless Lace Sensor matches perfectly with the humbuckers, and combined with the 5-way pickup selector and Bass Contour control adds up to a wide ranging guitar that’ll seamlessly take your tone from NYC to LA to Nashville & back via Manchester!

The solid korina body guarantees a resonant, light, and lively instrument that responds to the player’s touch.

Reverend (2010) Jetstream 290 (Metallic Red)

Reverend (2010) Jetstream 290 (Metallic Red)

Fat, raw and bluesy but with just the right amount of bite to cut through. The bridge pickup is slightly hotter than a traditional soapbar, and the neck pickup slightly cleaner. An amazing guitar for both clean and distorted tones with enough twang for country, but thick enough for rock.

The solid korina body guarantees a resonant, light, and lively instrument that responds to the player’s touch.

Bass Contour Control custom designed, passive bass reduction control allows you to re-voice the pickups. Roll back just a little to tighten up the low end. Or roll back further for a cleaner, percussive sound. Makes a humbucker sound like a single-coil, or gives P-90’s that classic California twang. Variable pickup voicing at your fingertips!

Tone Preserving Volume Control does not lose treble when turned down.

Custom Tone Control trims off only the highest frequencies without severly cutting volume.

Graphite Nut low friction for better tuning stability.

Low Friction String Trees (Bolt-On Series) low string resistance for better tuning stability.

Jens Ritter Discusses the Princess Isabella Baritone Guitar Concept

Concept

The PRINCESS ISABELLA Baritone Guitar Concept was conceived during a conversation with Rudy Pensa (the well known guitar collector from New York). He asked how I might design and create a “jazz guitar” using my established style and techniques of instrument making.
In my mind, the challenge was to create an instrument that would have similar sustain, attack and basic sound characteristics of a traditional “hollowbody” jazz guitar, but with a solid body.
After 4 years of continual design, research and development, the PRINCESS ISABELLA Baritone Guitar Concept is finished.

Premier Guitar Review – Ritter Princess Isabella Jazz Guitar

The special features of the PRINCESS ISABELLA include:

  • Body Thickness: The body is unusually thin, measuring approximately one inch in thickness.
  • String Attachment: The backside attached string bows function as an “attack delay” mechanism.
  • “Semi-Floating” Bridge: Instead of using a traditional “floating” bridge or attaching the bridge with studs into the body, the hand cast bridge foot is “mounted” into a small hollowed area carved into the body that exactly matches the contour of the bridge foot.
  • The bridge foot is held in place by a “friction setting” and only makes contact with a 2mm thin elliptical contour ridge along the hollow area. Thus, most of the surface area on the interior side of the bridge foot and the bridge studs “float” in the hollow area.

The Result:
The combination of these exclusive features create a “hollowbody” resonance, which results in a warm and open tone typically found only in a hollowbody guitar.

Crash’s Black Eye

This is the guitar featured on the cards printed exclusively for Rudy’s and features Crash’s trademark woman’s eye on this black bodied American Standard Strat guitar. The woman’s eye in Crash’s work represents “life within One” and he has said that in the mornings when you ride the subways, you can see what kind of day a woman is having by the expression in her eyes.

Robert on John Crash Matos

“I met John Crash Matos, the world famous graffiti artist when I contacted him about the guitars he had painted especially for Eric Clapton. It was not easy to negotiate having a guitar made for my collection as he said Eric had to grant his permission. Once we were able to gain his approval, Crash made me the first of many amazing art guitars.”

Eric then sold one of his Crash guitars at his Christie’s Auction for The Crossroads Foundation in 2004 for $321,000.00! Since then Crash and I have become good friends and we have since collaborated together on a lot of guitar projects. Aside from the limited run of fifty “Crashocaster” guitars Crash had already done for Fender, together we have worked on many more interesting projects. Among those works was a guitar featuring Crash’s artwork tooled completely by hand in leather by Bill Silverman of El Dorado Guitar Accessories in Pasadena. Crash is currently working on a Flying V which has been ported to allow him to paint on both vertical and horizontal surfaces.”

“With this project, my love of fashion, art and guitars has truly come together in the making of these unique instruments.”

Machines

This Flat Top Aerodyne Strat features artwork from Crash’s love of the subway train and its components. In particular he likes using the front of the train, its bumpers, numbers and other graphic shapes. All of Crash’s work is based on movement and when a train is moving at speed, you still can see the images clearly as if they are standing still. Hence all the elements Crash used in this piece speak loud and clear when you are rocking across that stage.
