D'Aquisto (1982) Special Electric (Cherry Sunburst)

D'Aquisto (1982) Special Electric (Cherry Sunburst)

Jimmy D’Aquisto (1935-1995) was an American guitar maker best known as the premier maker of custom guitars. He served as an apprentice to John D’Angelico in the early 1950s and was considered his successor after the latter’s death in 1964. From his shop in Farmingdale, New York and later during his “golden period” in Greenport Long Island, New York, D’Aquisto became the top guitar maker from the late 1960s until his death in 1995.

This amazing Special Electric is all original. The body is made out of laminated maple, wide maple neck and ebony fingerboard. Original electronics and Kent Armstrong pickups.

  • 2 mini toggle switch for series (up), split (middle), out of phase itself (down) on each pickup.
  • Slight minor repair on side of the guitar

George Benson's Grimes Kula Rose

George Benson's Grimes Kula Rose

This Beautiful piece belonged to George Benson. Excellent condition, w/ohsc.

Manufacturer’s Description:

Originally, the arch top instrument was designed by such early pioneer luthiers as Orville Gibson and Lloyd Loar to compete acoustically with the much louder band instruments like the horns and reeds before the days of electric pickups. The arch top design was capable of projecting a clearer sound with greater volume than its flat top predecessor. Designed for the acoustic jazz guitarist, the “Rose” model has a well defined, ringing tone rarely found in an arch top. It is a versatile performing guitar with a powerful projection and a clear voice making it an excellent guitar for both concert and studio work.

Gibson (1997) Custom L-5e

Gibson (1997) Custom L-5e

It doesn’t get much better than this! This stunning custom L-5e has what has to be the most heavily quilted set of maple we’ve ever seen. It would have been a shame to cover such beauty with the sunburst so often seen on L-5 so Gibson applied only the lightest vintage toner to this “citation” grade piece of wood.

The hand carved top is of select spruce, with tight even grain and a good bit of “silking”. The five piece neck is flamed beyond belief.

But enough about the wood. This thing sounds incredible! Although is equipped with a gold-plated “Johnny Smith” style pickup, a guitar like this remind us that the best L-5s were acoustic instruments.

Mint condition, with OHSC. Call for more information!

Gibson (2002) 1959 Les Paul Standard reissue

Gibson (2000) 1959 Les Paul Standard reissue (Faded Cherry Burst)

The Holy Grail of Guitars: The 1959 Les Paul Standard!

Gibson’s Custom, Art, Historic division provides an atmosphere for a select group of inspired artisans to carry on Gibson’s century-old tradition of creating exquisite, investment quality instruments that represent the highest standards of imaginative design and masterful craftsmanship.

The only major change to the Les Paul Standard in 1959 was the addition of wider, fatter, “jumbo” frets, which facilitated more dramatic bends. the real force of the change was not felt until the late 1960s when rock and blues players like Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, and Peter Green began to discover the fat, warm voice of the ’59 Standard. This moment in history marked the beginning of the idealization of the ’59 Les Paul as the Holy Grail of guitars in the minds of professionals, collectors and weekend warriors.

Gibson (2001) 1958 Les Paul Standard (Tobacco Sunburst)

Gibson (2001) 1958 Les Paul Standard reissue (Tobacco Sunburst)

“This guitar now has a rich, rubbed appearance that cannot be equaled at any price … this instrument is a true beauty.” — Gibson Gazette, December 1958

Objects of distinction are seldom recognized immediately, and this was certainly the case when Gibson introduced the newly renamed Les Paul Standard in July of 1958. Having already made several modifications to the base Les Paul Model guitar over the previous two years – the Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece being the most notable changes – the new Les Paul Standard introduced in 1958 hoped to correct Gibson’s waning sales of solid body electric guitars, which had been on the decline ever since 1953 when the company shipped 2,245 instruments.
